What it is about
THE YEAR IS 2392 In the southern hemisphere of Alpha Proxima IV, a regional polity known as the Republic of Maiombe is on its way to celebrate its ten years free from conflict, following a decades-long civil war which somehow embroiled a ludicrously disparate list of actors, both local and interstellar. FOR ONCE, THINGS ARE LOOKING UP Since multiple decades at war have left its coffers nearly empty, the past nine years have coincided with a gradual loosening of economic policy, alongside an opening to parliamentary politics. Despite the previous ruling uniparty still coming ahead, now as the leader of a governing coalition, this new arrangement seems to have worked out well enough: setting the conditions for a period of national renewal best embodied by the country's capital city, the seaside oasis of Nova Luanda. BUT THAT'S NOT WHERE YOU'RE GOING As an operative for Clear Paths, a paramilitary NGO specialized in ordnance disposal, you'll be going south: knee-deep into former rebel territories. There, you'll be assisting the Maiombese army in the culling of bipedal drones gifted to the rebels by their favored foreign donor: the United Systems Alliance. Drones which, on top of having gone feral since hostilities ended, may also be developing a form of "machine rampancy" - something which, due to stringent Virtual Intelligence conventions, shouldn't be possible for a weapons platform. SO KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED, AND MAKE NOTE OF ALL YOU SEE Inspired by CHVLR , Ballistic.exe and Metal Gear Solid V , Maiombe Tank Safari is a solo journaling game in which you take the role of a mech hunter on a mostly-solitary mission to observe, investigate and ultimately cull biomechanical combat drones gone feral - which now stalk the jungles like laser-armed cryptids. Your playthrough (or "run") is split into days: every day you roll 1d6 to determine how many events occur to your character, and draw cards from a poker deck to determine the nature of each one: ranging from untapped streams and well-timed air support , to rival mercenaries , corporate killers and unrelenting clouds of alien mosquitoes. Once you draw an ace, you get to choose between taking the shot or tailing your quarry for an easier shot on the next window of opportunity. Whenever you decide to shoot, you may resolve the action by simply rolling a D6 and checking your score against the target board - or by pinning it up to a real metal target and shooting it with a real shooting instrument , whether it's a BB gun, a foam dart or an actual hunting rifle.
