What it is about

Author's Note: This game was produced, written, and designed in a rushed 72-hour running window of time for the Ludum Praxi game jam. I panic-designed it in PowerPoint and then tried to add page organization in Adobe.  It is a scraggly, snaggle-toothed beast who's just learning to live indoors. Be patient with the poor thing. I did my best to finish whatever I could as time allowed. Things are crooked. Graphics are [hopefully] charmingly quirky and wild. Words might be repetitive. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You've been lost in the fog longer than you can remember. Now after all this time, something has changed. The fog has started open for you. .... Traverse the foglands and explore strange places and people to reach your home. Your only way through the fog is to rely on an old skill once forgotten... Cooking. Cooking is about more than food in this game. It's your way of connecting to others. Every being you meet in the fog is hungry for something. And you can help them Help others to help yourself. Find your way home. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Taste of Fog is a solo journaling rpg experience. You will play a character attempting to navigate their way through the strange and surreal landscapes to reach home. The prompts I provide are intended to inspire you towards creating your own story.  The guidelines I provide are mostly guardrails. Jump them when it suits you. You can likely power through the game in a single session. Or you can play across several days and pick up your journey whenever you'd like to continue it. The game is intended to be gentle and trigger-friendly. You are in control of your story and where it goes. The spirit of the game prioritizes kindness, understanding, and connection in the face of the strange and bizarre. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To play, at minimum you'll need cards, enough  space to potentially lay them out in 3x3 grid (they'll fill out your map), a coin,  and paper or other means to keep track of your experience. Here is an example of the gameplay loop. Unsurprisingly, several phases involve you journaling in response to your prompts or making notes on your page. Gameplay: Draw your card and read it Place it on your play area Explore, meet others, collect ingredients Cook Share a meal Rest Depart and venture on Eventually reach home. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoy this game, leave a comment. It will encourage me to prioritize cleaning it up and releasing a post-game jam version. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update 8/23/2026: I've added a clearly labeled Post-Jam version with some basic typo, grammar, and wording clean-up as a courtesy for anyone who wants to play and isn't worried about the Game Jam judging and voting. I'll update my game screenshots to the cleaned up versions after the Ludum Praxi Game Jam judging period ends. I'll also continue to try to clean things up and add some additional pages that I had to drop due to the time constraints. Additional minor clean up - I realized I needed to shift some silhouettes around. Future ambitions include more clean up + adding a few more reference pages I had to drop from the pdf due to time constraints. (I really wanted to have at least a walkthrough of a players first turn all the way through--to help ease people into the game and see how things play in practice.)
