What it is about
You don't begin this campaign as someone trying to be a hero. You begin as someone just trying to survive. From the Depths of Darkness... is a narrative-driven solo survival campaign built on the 2024 rules of D&D 5e, set within an alternate history of Exandria . You play Flint , a survivor of twenty-five years of subterranean captivity, whose body, language, and understanding of the world were fundamentally altered by what he endured. Escaping the darkness was only the beginning. The project grew from a relatively simple question: what if a character's past didn't stop being relevant once the adventure began? Flint's physical recovery, psychological trauma, language barriers, environmental fears, and relationships with his companions aren't simply details written into his backstory. They have mechanical consequences. His progress is earned, his limitations matter, and the world doesn't conveniently forget what happened to him. And neither does his character sheet. What It Isn't / What It Is This isn't a traditional power fantasy. Flint doesn't begin as an unstoppable hero, and strength alone won't solve everything. It isn't a min-max exercise built around chasing the biggest numbers, nor is it an automated dungeon crawler that makes your decisions for you. It is an attempt to answer one question: can playing D&D by yourself still feel like D&D? Not a choose-your-own-adventure borrowing the name. The actual experience: uncertain outcomes, difficult decisions, resource management, unexpected character moments, and dice rolls that can thoroughly ruin an otherwise excellent plan. Companions stand at your side, but surviving the world is still your responsibility. What It Introduces The Vanguard Paranoia Oracle — Resolves uncertain facts and unanswered questions when there's no Dungeon Master to provide the answers. Likelihood influences the roll, exceptional results introduce complications or benefits, and established outcomes remain binding. The Compounding Climax — Establishes difficulty guidelines and degrees of success or failure for ability checks and saving throws. The dice determine more than whether something simply works. The Posture Alignment Tracker — Measures Flint's physical recovery through earned story milestones. Permanent progress is tracked separately from temporary equipment modifiers and accumulated attrition. Hazards can suppress his current capabilities without erasing what he's already overcome. The Cognitive Linguistic Matrix — Tracks Flint's gradual understanding of Common through five proficiency tiers, earned Comprehension Points, study, and companion assistance. Language isn't automatically restored by spending enough time around people who speak it. The Shared Player Turn — Allows Flint and his companions to act on shared initiative while retaining their own actions, movement, reactions, and resources. Donut participates through commands, while Anam provides passive protection and reactive support. Companions remain mechanically relevant without requiring separate initiative turns for everyone. Survival and Environmental Pressure — Open-sky exposure, supernatural tethering, dunamantic hazards, travel, recovery, and the Camp Loop all influence the journey. Finding somewhere safe enough to rest can matter just as much as surviving the fight that came before it. Audience & Scope Designed for players interested in a difficult, atmospheric solo campaign where survival, character development, and meaningful consequences take priority over unrestricted power. Built upon standard D&D 5e 2024 rules, with explicit campaign-specific modifications and original mechanics. Familiarity with D&D is helpful; an additional software platform isn't required. Includes a curated soundtrack directory, giving important moments their own musical identity alongside the narrative and mechanics. Available free as an unofficial, noncommercial fan project. Original contributions are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0; third-party D&D and Exandria material remains subject to its respective owners' rights. Available Now — Alpha v0.5.4 Alpha v0.5.4 is the completed introduction to FTDOD, covering the campaign’s First Act. The release includes the FTDOD Adventure Guide (Alpha) and FTDOD Reference Guide (Alpha) , supported by a Quick Reference, Tracking Sheets, and Soundtrack Companion. Alpha’s narrative scope is complete. Future Alpha updates are reserved for corrections, clarifications, and issues discovered through play. The rest of Flint’s campaign belongs to Beta. What’s Being Built Current work focuses on consolidating FTDOD’s established mechanics into one consistent Rulebook, with SRD 5.2.1 as the primary reference for the underlying D&D rules. That foundation will support Beta’s books and the continuation of the campaign. The published Alpha remains available while that work continues. It gives you the beginning of Flint’s story; there is considerably more ahead of him. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— 📜 From the Author July 19, 2026 — Standing Upright FTDOD began as a personal attempt to tell a story about survival, perseverance, and chosen family. I had almost no tabletop background and very little knowledge of Exandria. What followed was an intense stretch of research, writing, mechanical design, and music-driven worldbuilding. August 19, 2026 — Holding Steadfast A month later, the project had grown well beyond the original idea. I was still learning, but FTDOD had started becoming a real game rather than just a private story experiment. August 30, 2026 — From the Darkness Comes Light FTDOD was released publicly for the first time. It was still unfinished, still changing, and very much a prototype—but it was finally out in the world. October 2nd 2026 — Last Breath Before Annihilation Alpha is complete. What began as a private experiment has become a finished introduction to FTDOD: a playable First Act, a complete reference guide, and a stable foundation for everything that comes next. The story is not finished. Alpha is. Beta is where the rest of FTDOD begins. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— This document, From the Depths of Darkness... , is a strictly non-commercial, transformative piece of creative fan artwork and alternative-universe homebrew.
