What it is about
The Kickstarter campaign for this game is now live. Try the first scenario with the free demo PDF below. It includes everything you need to play. Overview The Squirrels of Wildwood is a print-and-play hex-grid dungeon crawler set in a magical English woodland. It's inspired by board games like Gloomhaven and Tales from the Red Dragon Inn , but is designed to be easy to learn and set up. The grey squirrels of Wildwood, distrusted by the native animals, have tasked themselves with finding and defeating magically-corrupt animals throughout the forest. The game supports 1–2 players. Each of the eight ~60 minute scenarios features character dialogue, small choices that affect the scenario, and unique gameplay mechanics/objectives. Mechanics For each scenario, you choose which two of the four squirrel heroes you want to take. Where your squirrels stand changes how they can use magic. Different mana zones let them empower their movement or attacks with different effects, so choosing where to move is part of choosing how to attack. Your squirrel heroes gain XP to upgrade their empowerments. All four squirrels progress together, so no squirrel falls behind. Enemies have simple automated behaviour. Practical details You print out the PDF and craft the 8 included standees. You'll also need around 10 small cubes or tokens to track e.g. HP on character sheets, a pen or pencil to record XP and items between scenarios, and 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, and 20-sided dice (though a dice-rolling app will work fine). The PDF is black and white and low ink by default. In play, the game requires space for five A4 sheets of paper. Feedback from playtesters “I think the game is excellent. The rules were very clear, and the setup was fast, unlike other dungeon crawls I've played.” “I like the combat. It’s very intuitive and not overly complicated.” “I really enjoy your empowerment mechanic and the strategizing it makes you do. I also love that your characters have some progression.” The Kickstarter campaign for this game is now live.
