What it is about

File Seventy-Four A cold-case dossier for one player and a deck of cards. You are the records officer at a county archive in the Scottish Highlands. The office is closing on Friday. Tonight you are working on File 74/CAI/M-081 — a young man went into the Cairngorms in February 1974 and did not come out. The file is thin. You can be through it in an hour. You cannot. You read eight facsimile documents from the 1974 case file — a search coordinator's running log, a Met Office weekly report, a transcribed bothy register page, a photograph description card (photograph not recovered), a hand-marked OS map fragment, a letter from the missing man's mother, the Sheriff Court's open verdict, and a property store evidence manifest. For each document you draw one card from a shuffled deck. The suit tells you what kind of note to write in the margin. The rank gives you the specific prompt. ♠ Spades — Inaccuracies. Things that do not match another document. Three Spades and you can sign the file off. ♣ Clubs — Practical details. What the digital record needs. ♥ Hearts — Personal. What the file makes you, the officer, feel. ♦ Diamonds — Off. Something that should not be there. Three endings: Escape (sign the file off), Collapse (cannot sign — write an unsigned memo), Silence (seal the  envelope, initial the flap, tell nobody). WHAT YOU NEED One standard 52-card deck. This file, printed or on screen. A pencil. Forty-five minutes to an hour and a quarter. One sitting. WHAT YOU GET A 37-page PDF (US Letter) laid out as a real case file — dark form headers, red rubber-stamp graphics, typewritten meta blocks, a mother's letter in blue-black italic, a coroner's numbered findings, an evidence manifest table. 52 prompts across four suits — one for every card in the deck. Three endings. CONTENT NOTE This is a game about a missing person. No gore, no on-page violence. The dread is quiet, cumulative, administrative — a file that will not add up. Themes: solo winter hiking accidents, a mother writing to a police sergeant, open verdicts, the silence after a case closes without a body. FRAMEWORK File Seventy-Four is Wretched-adjacent. Three-ending structure and deck-as-oracle spine of The Wretched (Chris Bissette / Loot The Room), but no tower. This work is based on The Wretched (found at http://loottheroom.itch.io/wretched), product of Chris Bissette and Loot The Room, and licensed for our use under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license. WHY IT'S FREE This is Marrow & Ash Press Free Edition #1 — a one-sitting cold-case dossier meant to introduce the imprint's voice. If it worked for you, the three full-length titles below are $4.99 each and each is a proper 91-day Wretched & Alone game with a tower. If it worked for you and you have $3, the pay-what-you-want tip keeps this imprint publishing. If it worked for you and you don't, please leave a rating — free games live and die on ratings. FROM THE SAME IMPRINT • The Long White — Antarctic overwinter station horror. 91 days. Words on the tower. • The Last Bell — Folk-horror plague year. Words on the bell. • The Fathom Line — Decommissioned North Sea lightship. Words on the line. All at marrow-ash-press.itch.io.
