What it is about
The MKN Oracle is a minimalist, distilled, balanced, versatile, genre-agnostic solo oracle designed to help you play TTRPGs without a Game Master. It works by generating creative sparks, hints and answers to questions, helping you flesh-out your game. Webapp / Digital versions available at: mkn-publications.itch.io/mkn-oracle-webapp perchance.org/mkn-oracle Instructions: ➤ Using Cards Instead of Dice: If you don't have d8 & d6 dice, use a standard deck of cards divided into two stacks: Stack 1: All Aces and Jokers, acting as a d6 die: Spade -> 1 (mem-aid: It has 1 blade) Heart -> 2 (mem-aid: It has 2 lobes) Club -> 3 (mem-aid: It has 3 lobes) Diamond -> 4 (mem-aid: It has 4 sides) Black Joker -> 5 (mem-aid: Black cards are odds) Red / Color Joker -> 6 (mem-aid: Red cards are evens) Stack 2: The remaining 48 cards for the Signifier Sparks. ➤ Yes / No Oracle: Decide the probability of your question being answered with Yes. Certain: 5/6 ~83%, Likely: 4/6 ~67%, Fair: 3/6 ~50%, Unlikely: 2/6 ~33%, Improbable: 1/6 ~17%; then roll a d6 to get your answer. If needed or wanted, roll for Magnitude to know the quality, quantity or measure for the previous answer. ➤ Discovery Tables: Magnitude: The quality, quantity or measure of something. Encounter: For random encounters while exploring dangerous or unknown places. Use the Unique NPC or adversary option to introduce or re-introduce NPCs. Loot / Reward: The kind of loot or reward obtained. Tuner Roll: If you roll a 1 in either the Yes / No Oracle or in the Failure Move table, you may do a Tuner Roll with a d6, redirecting you to the Fiction Tuner tables: 1-2 for a Pacing Move, 3-4 for a Complication and 5-6 for an Alteration. Feel free to disregard it if you have too much on your plate — or don't! ➤ Fiction Tuners: Failure Move: Used when failing a save or check, it hints at how the situation develops — a "rolling with the punches" approach. Next roll w/ advantage applies the advantage mechanic, rolling two dice or twice and keeping the best result; think of it as the PC gaining experience, momentum or renewed zeal from attempts. Pacing Move: Delivers a new pacing push or dramatic beat. Mostly positive, but can be neutral or negative depending on Signifier Sparks and your expectations. Complication: Adds a twist or snag — usually negative — to the current story or scene, introducing new challenges. Alteration: Suggests altering an existing story element. Could be positive, negative or neutral depending on Signifier Sparks and your expectations. ➤ Signifier Sparks: Descriptor: Adjectives describing the nature of things. Agentic: Sentients. A character or person. (Use sparingly!) Action: Verbs indicating what action is implicated. Non-Agentic: Non-sentients. A concept, thing or event. ➤ Pro-Tips: Favor the Yes / No Oracle over Signifier Sparks whenever possible — it's faster and more concise. Let your expectations lead the ludonarrative and disregard anything that doesn't fit your view. Query as many answers as you need, or discard them, until the right meaning emerges.
