What it is about
For use with Ironsworn: Starforged by Tomkin Press The core of Starforged: Ecosystems is to determine the relationships between the strange alien creatures you may encounter on your journey. This game mode is similar to the rules for Undertake an Expedition. Rather than tracking your progress on an Expedition, you will be tracking your understanding of an Ecosystem by taking the Survey the Ecosystem move, or supplementing it by using other Expedition or Combat Moves in order to Encounter a Species. Rather than moving across the landscape, this represents you taking the time to understand an ecologically active site. When you score a hit on Fathom the Ecosystem, you can be considered a master of this ecology, whether that takes the form of a protector, a researcher, or a survivalist. An Ecosystem is meant to be played as a backdrop task while the Ironsworn has other adventures. The Ecosystem track is meant to help the player focus on learning the rules of the biome they find themselves in, which is knowledge they can apply over multiple quests or expeditions in a specific biome. Rather than repeatedly Survey the Ecosystem over and over, the player is encouraged to use other moves to Encounter a Species to fill out their diagram, then Survey the Ecosystem bit by bit as they Discovered an Interaction to build up their understanding. Ecosystems can be a good choice for players who want to focus on wilderness survival or discovery and worldbuilding. When you Fathom the Ecosystem, and score a hit , you are expected to Swear an Iron Vow to get involved in a follow up quest, whether that be a mission to preserve the Ecosystem from those who would exploit it, or to inform a faction about the opportunities or dangers you have discovered.
