What it is about

You are a god trapped outside of reality, yearning to manifest in the mortal world. A small cult has formed to worship you. You reach out to guide them towards the summoning ritual, but discover that they’re completely... The god’s eye view Overzealous is a solo RPG about a bunch of overenthusiastic cultists — and you, the god they’ll summon if they can stay focused long enough. It's like the old saying goes: You don't get to choose your worshippers. Try to ignore the weird ideas they have about you, and that they’ve given themselves a ridiculous name like "The Exalted Children Of The Abyssal Mantle". You have to make do with the cult you’ve been given. A tactical game for solo pen-and-paper play, Overzealous has an irreverent tone and a loud cartoonish feel. It comes as a 42-page PDF plus extra downloadables in the form of a cute little companion zine and a printable poster page for the stat trackers. If you’re interested in getting the game as a nice physical book, you can buy it here! Chaotic gameplay Overzealous is quick to get into and highly replayable. The game involves decisive choices and lots of random table based mayhem, plus some self-directed journaling. There are light ‘colony management’ aspects as you manage the Divergence , Fervour , Cultists , Monstrosity , and Imminence at play in your cult. Overzealous is mostly about being a god, having a bunch of overenthusiastic followers, and charting a course to deal with their antics. Those range from the relatively mild “getting excited about new robes” and “religious schism” to “inventing blood sacrifice” and “consorting with demons”. Impeding your progress Your sole aim is to get yourself summoned. Arrayed against you are the bloody squabbles and bizarre interests of your cultists, counterproductive stabbings and spiritually-pointless sidetracks from the overall goal. These will inevitably increase Divergence , Fervour , and Monstrosity amongst your cult. In the face of this, you’ll be trying to expand your cult and focus their energies to build up the Imminence you need to instantiate yourself. Until then, you only have so much reach into the real world. You’ll need to gently shepherd the cultists from your position in the unimaginable void until they perform the ritual to manifest you in their reality, thereby winning you the game. Or until the cult falls apart in a jumble of heresy and tentacles. Try it now Be come a part of something greater by rolling a bunch of dice. No? It's hard to believe you're not already sold, but you can also take a look at part of the game for free by downloading the sample file "Free Preview.pdf". Thanks to Gordy Higgins , Evlyn Moreau , and many other great artists whose work appears in Overzealous . Thanks also to all the Kickstarter backers who supported this game. Caution: Mayhem. Bickering. Cartoon murders. Profanity. Cannibalism. Religious schisms. Nameless horrors. Apostasy. Hordes of the undead. Diabolism. Death spirals. Cult ideologies. Hobbyist graverobbing. Blood sacrifice. Lots and lots of candles.
