What it is about
On Halloween night, the Lich King Master opened the graves and sent his undead against the city — and something older answered. Beneath the streets sleeps an ancient Monolith, and that night it woke. Its power took hold of some of the horde — vampires, zombies, ghouls, ghosts — and turned them against their master: monsters compelled to protect the very city they came to destroy. You are one of them. The Layered City: Night of the Monolith is a solo tarot journaling game on a single double-sided sheet. First, you lay the Foundation — one Major Arcana card, the theme everything else stands on. Then you play in Layers : seven nights after Halloween, each a scene drawn from the whole deck, each landing on top of all the ones before it. Your hero is built from two draws — the Gift the Monolith's power made of you, and the Curse your undeath still costs you. Cards that share a rank with your growing stack return as Echoes , because in this city, the past usually claws its way out. One final draw decides what the nights changed forever. You need: a standard 78-card tarot deck, a journal, a pen, and about 45 minutes. A shorter 3-Layer game and a campaign mode are included on the sheet, along with a variant for playing as one of the living in a city defended by monsters. One rule above all: you are the author here. If a draw lands somewhere you don't want to go, redraw it — the night has other streets. --- Created for the Last TTRPG Jam 2026 .
