What it is about
There are towns—quiet, old, tucked into valleys or perched at the edge of haunted forests—where people still live by signs, whispers, and rituals passed from tongue to ear for generations. Superstitions in these eerie places aren’t just folklore; they’re law, protection, or desperate bargaining. They govern what days you can bury the dead, which direction your shoes should face at night, and why no one whistles after sunset.
Whether grounded in ancient truth or born from the minds of terrified villagers, these beliefs shape entire communities. To outsiders, they may seem quaint or unnerving, but for those who live there, these superstitions are a matter of survival.
This supplement provides 100 superstitions from eerie, peculiar towns. Use them to flavor NPC dialogue, generate plot hooks, or add a sense of lived-in weirdness to your setting. You can roll a d100, pick directly, or even combine entries to build your own haunted hamlets.
Example: The party enters a misty fishing village where no one uses the word “ocean”—everyone refers to it only as “the hush.” When asked why, the barkeep nervously glances at the waves and says, “It listens.”
And remember—you’re never bound to a result. If one doesn’t fit, reroll or choose something spookier.
