What it is about
You've just taken the spare room at the top of 9 Wellow Street, an old boarding house with a landlady, four lodgers and someone in the attic nobody has seen. Over five short evenings you fill the room, meet the house and write it down. The Spare Room is written for people who have never played a solo RPG. Each evening hands you one new randomiser and shows you what it is good for: Evening One, Moving In: a coin. Yes or no, with a second flip for "and" or "but". Evening Two, Supper in the Kitchen: one d6, as an oracle and to pick from lists. Evening Three, The Lights Go Out: a deck of cards. Suit for what kind of thing, rank for how much, and the candle lasts ten cards. Evening Four, Rain in the Attic: a d20 roll-over for the one risky climb, with helpers adding to your odds. Evening Five, Sunday Supper: two d6, added for a bell curve and kept-the-better for the people on your side. Every evening has a rules page with a small chart of its odds, answers to the questions beginners ask, tables written for that die, a worked example, a practice roll and two journal pages. The book closes with your toolbox: the five tools, what each one is for, and a cheat card to copy into the next game you play. 39 pages, A4 and US Letter. You need a coin, two d6, a deck of playing cards with jokers, a d20 (or twenty playing cards, the book shows how) and a pencil. Each evening takes 20 to 40 minutes.
