What it is about
This is the alpha playtest version of a solo game in development: a first draft condensed down to one page in order to create something to build upon and develop. Long Ago The kingdoms of humanity and realm of faerie existed in a delicate balance. The people revered the old spirits and made offerings to the fair folk. And in doing so, empowered the faeries to keep the shadowy elements of the wood at bay. But as ages passed, darkness has crept into hearths and homes. Having forgotten the old ways, villagers know not where to turn as famine, destruction and loss have taken over. But you remember. When you were born, you were blessed by a true faerie godmother. She has gifted you with a bit of faerie magic, that has served you well and protected you. Now, your godmother has called upon you to spin new threads of allegience between your kin and the faerie folk. Your Quest Wend your way into the wood where the veil between your world and the realm of faerie is thin. Restore the old pacts by making an offering to six different faerie nobles, while avoiding the perils of the wood and returning in one piece. What You Need A deck of standard playing cards (no jokers). This is the story deck you use to guide your adventure. Three six-sided dice. Two of these are your your action dice you use to perform actions and find information about the world. The third is your gift die you spend to use your humble magic. A notebook and pencil to log your journey. A token of some kind to mark your position. About Away With The Faeries is a solo folklore roleplaying game currently in development. Using the One Page RPG Jam as a springboard, this game will be tested, revised and expanded into a more comprehensive solo and GMless game system. (Much bigger than one page!) . This work is based on Firelights, product of Fari RPGs developed and authored by René-Pier Deshaies-Gélinas, and licensed for our use under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License . By using the one page format, as well as building on the Firelights system, my goal with AWTF is to While it will stand along as it's own system, This game is very much a solo companion game to Perils & Princesses. It will have similar themes and terminology to capture a feel akin to P&P, while having unique mechanics that support easy and interesting solo play. Writing and layout by Ryan Lynch Development To-dos - The biggest playtesting goal is seeing how the gift die works in practice. Adding an extra dice can help players succeed and gives them an extra resource. To balance this out, resting requires an action with the potential for peril. Also finding a noble also has an opportunity for peril. Need to check this for balance. - Eventually pair the oracle table with encounters based on the specific card added to the map. This will most likely be a lot of writing, but may give opportunity to create more detailed lore for the individual entries, especially the faerie nobles. - Consider using aces as a special type of interaction opportunity. Perhaps a stronghold, village, market or other area that offers a an opportunity to earn a magic item or other special interaction at a cost. - Include more robust character gen that includes your personal relationship with the various fairy courts. Perhaps one of the suits is your godmother's court, and another is your rival! - Include mechanics for encountering your faerie godmother. - Examine some way to introduce character advancement in the form of increasing gift dice and the scope of words associated with a gift.
