What it is about

Makan. Minum. Maut. Eat. Drink. Death. The Midnight Kopitiam ( kopi (Malay) = coffee, tiam (Hokkien) = shop) opens only at midnight in forgotten, liminal places. Here, Malayan supernatural creatures gather to gossip like aunties, sip hot beverages, and chow down on greasy, sticky food. It's their safe and only refuge from the overstimulating human realm. This is a cozy-spooky solo journalling TTRPG and a hack of the wonderful wholesome game, Omotenashi by Onemorepotatochip. It also takes inspiration from Midnight Diner (TV show) and Coffee Talk (videogame). In Midnight Kopitiam, you play as the staff of a supernatural coffee shop catering to the needs of your ghostly customers and ensuring their cravings of the night are fulfilled. You will draw cards to generate your staff and customers, then answer staff-specific prompts to see how the night unfolds. Every customer pays in their own unique spooky way and will inspire a permanent change in the shop for future customers to benefit from. Like humans, they deserve exceptional care too! What you need to play A deck of cards - no jokers (alternative: playingcards.io) Writing tools and paper (digital or physical) The spirit of prihatin (A Malay word that means attentiveness and compassionate concern for the wellbeing of others) Transparency AI Note : I used Claude to proofread and sharpen some sentences, but apart from that, everything else was generated straight from mah brain. Content warning : Mild body horror and there's some gross food and beverages (in text and illustrations) Some helpful links for research for non-Malaysians/Indonesians/ Singaporeans/Bruneians Kopitiam (Wikipedia) Ghosts in Malay culture (Wikipedia) Note : This game is still in development and the final version will be released in the Malaysian TTRPG zine, A42BD6's Issue 2: Places.
