What it is about
Just One Rapier is a toolkit to help provide a Renaissance Flaire to oracle results for any game based around that period of history; swashbuckling highwaymen, heroes swinging along a chandelier, rapier duels in the streets, and pistols flashing in the dark. The Renaissance was a time of high art, high drama, and high stakes. Investigations into the disappearance of the King's Brother, murderers hiding in the sewers, and even dark magics swirling just below the surface threatening to send the city into turmoil are all possible avenues to explore from this period, and this toolkit can provide the key. To maintain a measure of immersion, all oracles in this toolkit are named after various forms of actual divination and oracular methods from during the time-period that match closest to the oracles purpose. These foundations can even potentially provide inspiration to how you arrived at the oracle results themselves. Contents include: CLEROMANCY: Casting Lots. A die roll to determine the answer to a basic Yes/No question with a chance to create random events. SORTES SANCTORUM: The Lot of Saints, read by casting dice and comparing to Scripture. This is the primary oracle that includes 3 separate tables that can be combined in multiple ways, or used individually, to build a clear picture ACTION: What does it do, will it do, etc ATTRIBUTE: What does it look like, seem to be, etc. THING: What is it, what is its nature, etc CUBOMANCY: Dice. A simple die roll to determine overall strength, size, height, etc. GEOMANCY: Prediction through Earth. Casting dice to determine the nature of a location GENERIC: A random location that could be anywhere FOCUSED: A random location based on your current surroundings SETTLEMENT: A form of feng-shui (yes, it was known) to determine the purpose and luck of a settlement based upon its location and orientation FOCUS: What is it for POI: A major point of interest APPEARANCE: What it looks like SIZE: How big is it? NPC CHIROMANCY : Palm-reading to determine someone's aspects CAREERS: What do they do? GOALS: What do they want? NATURE: What are they like? DISPOSITION: What is their behavior? APPEARANCE: What do they look like? ONOMANCY: The fortune behind a Name. NPC names based upon what was present during the Renaissance Settlement names based upon real-life cities and towns that were present during the Renaissance AEROMANCY: Reading the Weather and Clouds. Your basic temperature weather oracles for each season. APANTOMANCY : Casting lots to determine your luck in the wilds. A simple set of tools for exploration and encounters DIVINATION: Determining the nature of an event INVESTIGATION: Tools to build a Who-Done-It without spoiling the ending, and tools to investigate the crime itself ITEM-BASED: A classic, quest-based adventure involving rescuing, retrieving, and maybe even stealing a valuable item CARROMANCY : Predicting a dungeon through a candle's wax-drippings. A set of oracles for exploring dungeons, homes, palaces, and anywhere else your quarry may hide. Includes Dressing and Location specific tables. CARTOMANCY : Fortune through Cards. Includes a set of oracles just for the Major Arcana of a Tarot Deck to keep it simple. Finally, Just One Rapier is a system written also as a solo-supplement to play Chains of Gaelia , a dark-fantasy, Renaissance RPG that is a love letter to Lovecraftian horror and Investigations, along with OSR's deadliness and player-driven solutions. Combined, you can take a more light-hearted drama and turn it into an exploration of human greed and the consequences of sin set against the shadows of an oil-painted background.
