What it is about

Dragons are some of the most iconic, and most dangerous, of creatures to face in a fantasy roleplaying game. And as we all know, dragons have hoards. Whether they're vaults of gold taken from the dwarven king who once held this mountain, gems and crystals dug from the walls of its lair, or merely the treasures of those who came to slay the dragon and failed in the attempt, the size and potency of a hoard speaks volumes of the dragon who holds it. So if you are planning on putting your players up against a chromatic dragon, consider some of these unique items to add to its hoard! Some of them are merely pieces of set decoration, some are useful items and others are clues to a deeper story the wyrm may be in no state to tell by the time your players find what it was keeping in its cavern. Alternatively, these might represent rewards given to a party who acts on a dragon's behalf, or parts of your plot they have to steal if they don't want to face the dragon in open battle. In the end, the final decision for how you use these treasures is up to you! This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier. Here are some sample results: A huge stone sarcophagus is placed atop a dais in an antechamber. The lid is carved with the likeness of a knight, his hands gripping the hilt of a greatsword. Inside the sarcophagus is a body wrapped in a suit of blackened full plate armor. Those who translate the inscription on the sarcophagus realize it reads, "Rest in honor, noble foe." Examining the heraldry on the armor, this appears to be the final resting place of Gregor Windborne, the Black Knight. A man known for a lifetime of protecting towns and villages from deadly forces, most had thought he'd given his life to defeat a dragon. That seems true in one sense... the wyrm honored this fallen foe by never darkening the skies over the town he gave his life for ever again. A large stone sits atop a small plinth. Those who examine it closely find it charred and slagged around the edges, but winking through the crust is the gleam of star metal. There's enough of it to make an alloy that could forge four weapons, or for two suits of armor or shields. This much adamantine is a rare find indeed, and it might just be one of the most valuable things in this entire hoard. A strangely-shaped saddle sits atop a mound of treasure. Those who examine the saddle, the length of its straps, and the material it's made from can ascertain that it was worn by the dragon... but that asks more questions than it answers. Who was the rider that convinced the wyrm to wear this? Did the wyrm put on the saddle willingly, or did the rider have some power over the dragon? What reason could the dragon have for keeping the saddle... and is the rider still alive, or was this meant to be a kind of memorial to that mysterious individual? A large pool of crystal-clear water sits along one side of the lair, a statue of a dragon bent over it. Water drips from the statue's mouth, but those who examine it closely can tell the statue is made of a single, solid piece of rock. Inside the dragon's mouth, cleverly hidden out of sight, is a magical decanter that's slowly trickling clear, cool water into the pool. Dislodging the decanter is tricky, and turning it off would require studying the exact spells that empower it, but it would be a useful item to have on one's travels. A wooden barrel sits off to one side, the brass fixtures and wax seals still unbroken and in place. Those who look closely find this bleached wood cask contains fine, pink salt harvested from a far-off mountaintop. Worth its weight in gold (or perhaps in platinum, depending on who one asks), this spice is quite valuable depending on who one takes it to. Casks like this are usually sent in threes, however, which implies either its mates are hidden somewhere in the lair, or the wyrm already devoured them.
